Choose your state to explore curriculum connections related to Costa Rica’s rainforest ecosystems, biodiversity, conservation, and environmental stewardship, followed by national frameworks.
Showing Kentucky standards first. National frameworks (NGSS, ACTFL, C3, NCSS) follow below.
Science • 2022 KAS
Standard: Ecosystem factors, population patterns and biodiversity.
Program Connection: Apply learning through field observations or follow-up data analysis.
Standard: Ecological relationships, ecosystem resilience and reducing human impact.
Program Connection: Explore turtle habitat, beach protection and conservation decisions.
Standard: Natural resources, sustainability and possible environmental solutions. Computational simulation or technological-design expectations require a teacher-directed follow-up task.
Program Connection: Connect eco-farm activities with sustainable practices and resource-use decisions.
Standard: Kentucky Academic Standards for Social Studies address geographic inquiry, human–environment interactions, culture and civic participation. Relevant strands vary by course.
Program Connection: Compare rural community needs and environmental stewardship.
Standard: World-language interpersonal communication and cultural understanding, subject to language support; agriculture, food and natural resources pathways. Course-specific CTE codes are determined by the teacher.
Program Connection: Connect Spanish interactions with regenerative agriculture and ecological resource management.
Science • 2022 Standards
Standard: EVSC.LS2.1 — factors shaping terrestrial ecosystems; EVSC.LS2.2 — adaptations in aquatic habitats; EVSC.LS2.3 — carrying capacity, which requires a modeling activity; EVSC.LS2.7 — ecosystem change and resilience.
Program Connection: Explore terrestrial ecosystems, aquatic habitats, environmental pressures and ecosystem resilience through field observations. Teachers can assign a follow-up modeling activity for carrying capacity.
Standard: EVSC.LS4.3 — impacts of habitat loss, invasive species, pollution and climate change on biodiversity. BIO1.LS2 provides related Biology I ecosystem connections; teachers should assign precise codes according to the course.
Program Connection: Connect field observations in Costa Rica with biodiversity conservation and environmental stewardship.
Standard: Tennessee Academic Standards for Social Studies currently in effect address geography, human–environment connections, culture and civic engagement. The 2024 revision is scheduled for implementation in 2027–28; it should not be labeled as currently in effect.
Program Connection: Explore relationships between local communities, cultural traditions and environmental stewardship.
Standard: Tennessee world-language communication, cultures and connections through locally guided cultural exchange, with relevant career and technical education (CTE) agriculture and natural-resource pathway applications.
Program Connection: Connect cultural learning with regenerative farming, ecological resource management and community interactions.
Science • Current TEKS
Standard: Ecosystem interactions, resources, biodiversity, population dynamics, field investigation and human impacts.
Program Connection: Connect farm, rainforest and coastal fieldwork with ecosystem interactions, resource management and environmental conservation.
Standard: Aquatic habitats, species and environmental quality.
Program Connection: Connect wildlife observations during boat excursions with aquatic habitats, species and coastal conservation.
Standard: Organism interactions, ecological systems and the effects of environmental change. These are course-level citations; teachers should select the precise student-expectation subparts for assessed activities.
Program Connection: Study organism relationships, ecological systems and environmental change through field observations.
Standard: Physical and human geography, land use, sustainability and interactions between people and the environment. The newly adopted 2026 social studies revisions are not effective until July 2027.
Program Connection: Explore how local communities interact with natural environments and manage land and resources.
Standard: Chapter 114 covers interpersonal language and cultural engagement. Chapter 130, Subchapter A, covers agriculture, plant and natural-resource systems. Match exact student expectations with the teacher’s enrolled course.
Program Connection: Connect Spanish-language interactions and cultural learning with agriculture, plant systems and natural-resource management.
Environmental Science
Standard: Examine factors affecting sustainable development and resource management, and evaluate conservation or management approaches. A comparison to Louisiana resources is needed.
Program Connection: Explore sustainable practices and resource management in Costa Rica, then compare them with Louisiana environments.
Standard: Investigate the risk–benefit consequences of environmental decisions.
Program Connection: Consider the potential benefits and risks of conservation choices and their effects on ecosystems and communities.
Standard: Examine the impacts of introduced species on native ecosystems only when this topic is explicitly addressed.
Program Connection: Connect biodiversity observations to the protection of native species and ecosystems when applicable.
Standard: Explore ecosystem resilience and ways to reduce human impacts on natural systems.
Program Connection: Examine conservation practices, environmental stewardship and sustainable resource use in Costa Rica.
Standard: Louisiana Student Standards for Social Studies connect geographic inquiry, cultural interaction and civic engagement.
Program Connection: Compare conservation priorities and community needs in Costa Rica with Louisiana environments.
Standard: Connect world-language communication and cultural learning with Agriscience topics, including food systems, soil, agriculture and stewardship. Select district-approved course codes for any assessed claims.
Program Connection: Explore local culture, agricultural practices, food systems and environmental stewardship through experiential learning.
These national frameworks are displayed below the selected state standards for every state.
Standards: HS-LS2-1 / HS-LS2-2 — ecosystem and biodiversity data; HS-LS2-6 / HS-LS2-7 — ecosystem dynamics and environmental protection; HS-ESS3-1 — natural-resource considerations; HS-ESS3-3 / HS-ESS3-4 — sustainability and solution evaluation. HS-LS4-6 is an optional extension only if students create or revise a simulation.
Program Connection: Field participation alone does not satisfy every performance expectation. Teacher-designed analysis or modeling may be necessary.
Framework: C3 Inquiry Arc: Dimension 1 (developing questions), Dimension 2 (geography and human-environment relationships), Dimension 3 (evaluating evidence), and Dimension 4 (communicating conclusions and taking informed action).
Program Connection: Community discussions, field inquiry and reflection support these dimensions.
Framework: Communication (interpersonal, interpretive and presentational), Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities.
Program Connection: Spanish-language evidence depends on access to Spanish communication and school-selected language tasks.
Framework: Four strands: Questioning, Analysis and Interpretation Skills; Environmental Processes and Systems; Skills for Understanding and Addressing Environmental Issues; Personal and Civic Responsibility.
Program Connection: Support environmental inquiry, ecosystem observations and responsible conservation decisions.
Framework: Principle 5 (ocean biodiversity) and Principle 6 (ocean-human connections).
Program Connection: Explore these connections through sea turtles, beaches, watersheds and coastal environments.
Framework: Natural Resource Systems, Plant Systems and Environmental Service Systems. Course-level alignment varies.
Program Connection: Eco-farm activities, habitat care, reforestation and responsible resource use.
Framework: Evidence-based writing, short research, structured discussion and student presentations can connect to adopted state ELA standards. Specific Common Core codes are not listed as universal requirements because states use differing ELA standards.
Program Connection: Students can document field observations, support conclusions with evidence and present their learning.
Framework: AP Environmental Science: Ecosystems, Biodiversity, Land and Water Use, Global Change. CASEL competencies: social awareness, relationship skills, self-management and responsible decision-making. These are connections, not graduation standards.
Program Connection: Extend learning through environmental research, collaborative reflection and responsible decision-making.
