State Standards — Kentucky

Project Esperanza: Curriculum & Standards

World Languages / Spanish

Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for World Language (adopted 2021), built on ACTFL/NCSSFL proficiency benchmarks.

Intercultural Communication strand: investigating and interacting with the products, practices, and perspectives of a target culture

Communication strand: Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational benchmarks, Novice through Intermediate proficiency

Daily Spanish use with a multilingual Dominican-Haitian community supports both strands

Social Studies

Kentucky Academic Standards for Social Studies (2019), High School strands.

HS Geography (HS.G): human-environment interaction, migration, and global interdependence

HS World History (HS.WH): examining historical and contemporary global issues

HS Civics and Economics: civic participation, economic opportunity, and community systems, as explored through Puerto Plata’s Haitian immigrant and refugee community

Career & Technical Education

Kentucky CTE career pathways relevant when the educational-farm or community-service components are included.

Human Services: community support and youth-development pathway standards

Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources pathway standards

Education & Training pathway standards, where students work alongside Esperanza’s educators

National Frameworks

ACTFL World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages

For a Spanish or World Languages class, the program connects with ACTFL’s five goal areas.

Communication: apply Spanish in authentic settings and record language use

Cultures: engage with cultural learning and the Dominican-Haitian linguistic and community context

Connections: use language learning to explore migration, education, agriculture, and community development

Comparisons: compare language, cultural perspectives, and community experiences

Communities: interact respectfully through approved, community-guided activities

C3 Framework for Social Studies State Standards

When the itinerary includes community learning, cultural exchange, or service, students may connect their experience to the C3 Inquiry Arc.

Developing Questions and Planning Inquiries: prepare questions about local education, community life, and community priorities

Applying Disciplinary Concepts and Tools: explore the cultural, geographic, and civic context of Puerto Plata

Evaluating Sources and Using Evidence: draw on approved presentations, observations, and conversations to support understanding

Communicating Conclusions and Taking Informed Action: share reflections or presentations and connect service activities to community-identified priorities

Next Generation Science Standards

When educational-farm or environmental components are included, possible connections include HS-ESS3-3, HS-LS2-7, and HS-ESS3-4. Science and Engineering Practices may include asking questions, planning observations, analyzing evidence, constructing explanations, and communicating information.

Standards references reflect each state’s currently adopted academic standards as of this writing. Districts should confirm current course codes with their curriculum office, as standards are periodically reviewed and revised.
